
Competition Requirements
CHECKLIST FOR NEW COMPETITORS (Print Checklist)

Dancers must be registered with ScotDance Canada. Take this card to every competition or risk not dancing and/or not receiving awards.

Register for desired competition(s).

Proper Costumes and Supplies: *Parents are responsible to source proper dance attire on their own. Please consult the "links" page for information on where to purchase dance supplies. Most dance outfits are custom made, but new dancers might be able to find something second hand. Feel free to inquire with questions.*

Highland slippers
-
No jewellery is to be worn.
-
No nail polish.
-
No headbands or decorative clips (plain bobby pins and a hair net are required).

Hair should be tied back neatly off the face (i.e. bun or french braid).

Please have Lindsey see the entire outfit prior to the competition.

Bring lots of safety pins to competion.
-
Bring bobby pins, hair net, hair spray, lipstick (optional), and comb.

Highland Kilt Outfit (worn for Pas de Basques, PdB and Highcuts, and highland dances such as Fling, Sword, S.T, Reel) -
-
White knee socks (or tartan socks to match the same tartan in the kilt).
-
Elastics at the top of the socks to prevent the socks from falling down.
-

Black underpants under kilt.
-
Kilt or kiltie (the kiltie has less material and is great for primary or beginner dancers)
-
White highland blouse
-
Optional - Highland vest over blouse or Highland jacket with lace dickey.

White Dress or Aboyen (worn for Lilt, Flora and other National dances) -

White dress

Plaidie
-
White peticote for under dress

White underpants

White ankle socks (white knee socks acceptable for young dancers)

Optional - Full aboyen (Skirt, Peticote, Blouse, Plaidie)

A few private lessons are required prior to competitions

DANCING PENALTIES (In Competition)
The following penalties are recommended by the SOBHD (Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing)
A deduction of 5 points should be made for:
-
missing the start of a dance (beginner,novice, intermediate, premier)
-
temporarily dancing off time (beginner, novice, intermediate, premier)
-
touching but not displacing the swords (beginner, novice, intermediate)
-
dancing consistently off time (primary)
-
not using head movements (premier dancers)
Disqualification should result from:
-
dancing wrong step in a championship (premier)
-
dancing step in wrong order set for a championship (premier)
-
dancing a step not listed by the SOBHD (Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing) (beginner, novice, intermediate, premier)
-
stopping momentarily during a dance
-
dancing off time consistently
-
falling or tripping
-
touching but not displacing the swords (premier)
-
displacing one's own sword or the sword of another competitor (Note: in the later case the dancer would be allowed a re-dance at the Judges' discretion.) (beginner,novice, intermediate, premier)
-
being in the wrong place in the reel (intermediate. premier)
DRESS CODE PENALTIES
A deduction of 5 points should be made for the following:

wearing jewellery (except for wedding band)
-
socks falling down (intermediate, premier)
-
heel of slipper coming off or shoe laces coming undone (beginner, novice)
-
any part of outfit or equipment falling off (intermediate, premier)
-
wearing tights under socks (intermediate, premier)
-
wearing light underpants with Highland outfit or dark underpants with National or Irish Jig dress
-
wearing net or colored underskirt with National dress or Irish Jig dress or wearing incorrect Sailor's Hornpipe uniform
-
Premier male competitors not wearing a hat with Highland outfit (intermediate, premier)
-
Premier dancers not wearing clan socks
-
all competitors not wearing a hat for the Sailor's Hornpipe
-
not wearing black highland slippers for Highland or Scottish National
Disqualification should result from:
-
slipper coming off
-
not wearing Jig shoes in Irish Jig competitions
-
heel of slipper coming off or shoe laces coming undone (intermediate, premier)
*The following are acceptable:
Until a dancer reaches the Premier section, it will be acceptable to wear white or plain colored knee socks to match the kilt, socks can be full clan or diced re/white, blue/white or green/white
JUDGES' DECISION - The decision of a judge is final and no discussion or correspondence can take place between a judge and a competitor or the parent or guardian of a competitor regarding any decision made by that judge. Judges' marks are only available for scrutineering purposes and are not made public.
